Introduction – We need to be careful not to judge life solely upon current circumstances but by the God of the circumstances.

I. When terror strikes – vv. 1-6a

  • Obedience does not mean trial free
  • Some questioned God

II. Where to turn – vv. 6b-8

  • The people turned to anger
  • David adjusted his focus
  • What had God done?
  • God, what do you desire?

III. What God was really doing – vv. 9-20

  • David did what Saul was supposed to do –I Samuel 28:17-18
  • Recovered all and more

IV. The shared victory – vv. 21-25

  • Recognition that God was using them as vessels of blessing – Matthew 27:39-44

Conclusion: Allow God to adjust our eyes to what He is doing by remembering what He has done.

  • Recognition of God’s plan – 1 Samuel 18:3,4

II. Friendship is loyalty – 1 Samuel 19:1-6

  • Maintaining the balance of competing commitments with truth
  • John 15:10

III. Friendship is intimacy – 1 Samuel 19:7

  • Allowing access to our hearts – John 15:15

IV. Friendship is sacrifice – 1 Samuel 20:32, 33, 42

  • Tipping of the balance – John 15:13

Conclusion: Friendship becomes tribute – 2 Samuel 1:25-27; John 15:16-17

Introduction- This chapter in David’s life reminds us that some things are not just worthy of a fight but also worth dying for if need be.- Jude 3

I. There is an enemy

  • Things that challenge us – v.10
  • Things that bring fear – v.11
  • Things that don’t ‘just go away’- v.16

II. There is a battle – v.29b

  • Making decisions based on sight – v.4
  • Making decisions based on feelings – v.28
  • Making decisions based on truth – vv.32-37
  • Making decisions based on God’s Word – v.47, John 6:63b

III. There is victory

  • Belief in spite of circumstances
  • The world view – vv.42-44
  • The God-view – vv.45-47
  • The new champion – v. 49

IV. Faith is contagious

  • Faith enables more faith – v.52

Conclusion – Believing God is always a defining moment in our life.

Introduction- We fight for a bright future when recognizing today’s choices will determine it.

I. God’s choice – v. 1

  • The people’s choice – Saul – I Samuel 15:35
  • The Lord’s choice – Acts 13:22

II. Preparation – vv.2-5

  • Sanctify – set apart – I Samuel 15:22-23
  • David knew what God desired – Psalm 51:17

III. Priority – vv. 6-11

  • God looks at our heart – I Peter 3:4
  • God looks at our faithfulness – Psalm 78: 70-72
  • God looks at the overlooked – I Corinthians 12:24
  • God looks at contemplation and communion of a shepherd

IV. Power – vv. 12-13

  • A Clean Heart – Matthew 25:23
  • Spiritual dependence – I Samuel 17:37
  • The Spirits control – Ephesians 5:18-21

Conclusion – David fought for a bright future by obeying God in the small things each day – Song of Solomon 2:15

Introduction – The finish line at the end of life is called death. The question is “then what”? Luke 12: 13-21 (NLT)

  • This man was not wicked, dishonest, evil, unethical or abusive. He was driven, ambitious, entrepreneurial and shrewd.
  • God calls him a fool! He made three mistakes:

I. He lived like this life is all there is – A fatal miscalculation:

  • His philosophy was the ‘here and now’ – The Dash I Corinthians 15:19 (NLT)
  • Land of living and dying – Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NLT)
  • He wanted more – Ecclesiastes 2:18 (NLT)
  • Not the right measurement – Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)

II. He lived like there would always be more time – A costly procrastination:

  • The illusion of control – James 4:14 (NLT)
  • Live each day to the fullest – Tomorrow is not guaranteed

III. He did not live his life in the light of the life to come – A missed preparation:

  • Eternity is primary – success demands that we respond now in light of then– Passing through – II Corinthians 4:17-5:1 (NLT)
  • Even disappointment is a sign, an aching and a hunger for better – Homesickness – I Corinthians 2:9 (NLT)
  • Being prepared is life’s important issue – failing to prepare is the worst tragedy – Luke 9:25 (NLT)
  • We must e reconciled to God – Why? Hebrews 9:27 (NLT)

Conclusion – Prepare for THEN….NOW!
