Introduction – Abraham arranging a marriage for his son Isaac is a ‘type’ or ‘prophetic picture’ of our relationship to Christ.

I. The king – Abraham – vv. 1, 4

  • Makes a marriage for his son – Matthew 22;2

II. The servant- Holy Spirit

  • Speaks of the Bridegroom – John 16: 13-14
  • Enriches bride with grooms gifts- Galatians 5:22- 23
  • Brings the bride to the groom – v. 61

III. Rebekah – The Church – v. 16

  • Called out virgin bride – II Corinthians 11:2

IV. Isaac – Bridegroom – Christ – v. 63

  • Bride loves though unseen through testimony of servant – I Peter 1:8
  • Goes out to meet bride – I Thessalonians 4:14-17

Conclusion – Our relationship in Christ is truly a marriage made in heaven.

Introduction: The special friends and favorites of heaven are not exempt from death.

I. Sarah’s death – vv. 1- 2

  • Death parts those whom nothing else could part
  • Abraham mourns and weeps
  • Lawful and dutiful – Romans 12:15
  • Sorrow not as without hope – I Thessalonians 4:13

II. A burying place – vv.3 – 15

  • The danger of over-grieving
  • More care for resting place for soul than burying place for body
  • Reminder that we are sojourners
  • Request, offer, refusal

III. Paid in full –vv. 16 – 20

  • Business done openly
  • Paid immediately – eternal inheritance does not entitle us to worldly possession

Consider:

  1. A burying place was the first ground Abraham possessed in Canaan.
  2. The only land Abraham ever owned
  3. The sepulcher was at the end of a field
  4. Still wandering in life Abraham secures a place for resurrection

Introduction – Try as we may, only God can provide what is necessary for our salvation.

I. The test – vv. 1-2

  • Do you love Me more than Isaac? 1 Peter 1:7
  • Deliberate – three day journey

II. The response – vv. 3-10

  • The difficulty: breaking through rationality
  • The picture: question and answer
  • God’s love – John 3:16.– Isaiah 53:10a
  • Our duty – Luke 14:26- 27

III. The interruption – vv. 11-14

  • Isaac rescued
  • Abraham approved/applauded
  • Substitute provided/Jehovah-Jireh
  • God will be seen – v.14b

IV. Faith’s reward – vv. 15-19

  • God’s oath – Hebrews 6:13,, 17-18
  • Multiply – Galatians 3:14, 16

Conclusion – Abraham was willing to give his son to honor God but God then promised to give His Son a sacrifice for man’s salvation.

Introduction: What we can do is limited compared to what God can do through His promises.

I. The child of promise born – vv. 1-8

  • Above human nature – 2 Peter 1:4
  • Son of promise – Hebrews 11:11
  • Laughter – Isaac – Who could imagine? – Ephesians 3:20

II. The child of flesh – vv. 9-21

  • Mocking Ishmael – Galatians 4:29
  • Casting out – Romans 9:7, 1 Peter 2:9
  • Wilderness wandering/falling short – Romans 3:23
  • God opens the eyes of those crying for mercy

Conclusion: Those of this world find a home here while children of promise aim at heaven.

Introduction – One can air brush a blemish out of a picture but the pimple is still there.

I. Relapse – vv. 1-2

  • Sin begets sin
  • Dishonesty and neglect
  • Been there, done that

II. The warning – vv. 3-7

  • You are a dead man
  • Confidence in ignorance – 1John 3:21
  • Protection from sins desire

III. Cautious obedience – vv. 8-13

  • Holy fear
  • A prophets rebuke
  • A bad agreement – v. 13

IV. Restoration – vv. 14-18

  • Kindness in offering – gifts and liberty
  • Prayer for judgment removed – Job 42:10

Conclusion – Only God can replace our cheating heart.

Introduction- Depending upon the direction one chooses, life will either be good or severe. – Romans 11:22

I. Lot’s sole goodness – vv. 1-3

  • Matthew 10:11 – recognition

II. Sodom – hence the name – vv. 4-11

  • Sold out to wickedness – Romans 1:26-27
  • Hatred for the reproof
  • Protection from danger
  • Blind to the truth – Romans 11:8-9

III. A place of safety – vv. 12-23

  • Give notice – witness
  • Dangerous lingering/gracious violence – Jude 23
  • Press upwards – the mountain
  • Sealing of God’s servants – Revelation – 7:3

IV. Justice revealed – vv. 24-29

  • Judgment from God
  • Hearts revealed – Luke 17:31-32

V. Forever forgotten – vv. 30-38

  • A great, sad sin – moderation to excess

Conclusion: I Corinthians 10:12- Daily vigilance and reliance upon God’s word is our only firm foundation.

I. Special visit – vv. 1-8

  • Expectation
  • Entertainment

II. Purpose revealed – vv. 9-22

  • For Sarah – a promise by faith – Hebrews 11:11
  • For Sodom – a judgment
  • Grace before wrath
  • God reveals His heart to His friends

III. Intercession made – vv. 23-33

  • Hate sin, pity and pray for sinners
  • He pleads in humility for those that are righteous
  • Success of prayer

Conclusion: God is never weary of hearing prayers for grace – Let us pray for America and the lost world.

I. Covenant/promise circumstance – vv. 1-3

  • Talks by the Word and Spirit- Proverbs 6:22; John 14:26

II. Promise details – vv. 4-6

  • Father of many nations
  • New name – Revelation 2:17
  • Father of faithful – Romans 4:16

III. The seal of promise – vv. 7-14

  • Everlasting in scope
  • Everlasting possession – Ephesians 1:14; Hebrews 11:16
  • Circumcision – identity – Romans 2:25-29; 4:11-12
  • Bloody ordinance – Hebrew 9:22- Baptism

IV. Son by Sarai- vv. 15-22

  • Abrahams delight – John 8:56

V. Ready obedience – vv. 23-27

Conclusion – When cut to the heart, our desire becomes what God desires for us.

Introduction- Reaction to injury by retaliation never brings resolution.

I. A bad idea – vv. 1-3

  • Fix a problem outside of God’s plan

II. The two wrongs – vv. 4-6

  • Hagar’s provocation
  • Sarai’s harsh hand – I Peter 2:20

III. Arrested in flight – vv. 7-9

  • Mercy calls us when we wander
  • Pride check – from duty and privilege
  • Humble ourselves

IV. God sees me – vv. 10-14

  • All seeing/knowing God – Psalm 139:1-6

V. Flesh son/ Spiritual son – vv. 15-16

  • Law verses grace – Galatians- 4:23, 31, 5:1

Conclusion – It’s easier to assume the form of godliness than to submit to the power of godliness revealed at Calvary.
