Introduction: The special friends and favorites of heaven are not exempt from death.
I. Sarah’s death – vv. 1- 2
- Death parts those whom nothing else could part
- Abraham mourns and weeps
- Lawful and dutiful – Romans 12:15
- Sorrow not as without hope – I Thessalonians 4:13
II. A burying place – vv.3 – 15
- The danger of over-grieving
- More care for resting place for soul than burying place for body
- Reminder that we are sojourners
- Request, offer, refusal
III. Paid in full –vv. 16 – 20
- Business done openly
- Paid immediately – eternal inheritance does not entitle us to worldly possession
Consider:
- A burying place was the first ground Abraham possessed in Canaan.
- The only land Abraham ever owned
- The sepulcher was at the end of a field
- Still wandering in life Abraham secures a place for resurrection
